Stock flower 'Anytime Yellow' (Matthiola incana)
Stock flower ‘Anytime Yellow’ (Matthiola incana) is a cut-flower variety that produces strong, upright stems topped with softly yellow, fragrant flower spikes and a high percentage of double blooms. It flowers over a long period from spring through autumn (April–September) and is well suited to successive harvesting. Plants reach up to 75 cm in height and prefer a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil; pinching is not recommended.
The most important thing to know about stock is that it is a cool-season flower and performs best in moderate temperatures. The heaviest flowering occurs when night temperatures stay below 15–16 °C; plants can tolerate light frosts, while warm weather signals them to slow growth and stop blooming. In hot conditions, stock finishes quickly, so it is most often grown as a spring crop, but it can also be grown successfully in autumn when temperatures cool again. Correct timing is essential: seeds are started indoors and seedlings transplanted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Seeds require light to germinate, so they should be only lightly covered with soil or gently pressed into a moist growing medium. Keep seeds consistently moist but not waterlogged. Optimal germination temperature is 15–21 °C, with seedlings emerging in 10–14 days. For continuous flowering, succession sowing every two weeks is recommended.
