Greater burdock 'Tonkinokawa Long' (Arctium lappa), 5 seeds
Great burdock 'Tonkinokawa Long' is a Japanese variety of burdock root. Grown for the root or for decorative purposes. Only the roots that form in the first year are tasty. The taste is bittersweet. In the first year after sowing, flowers do not form.
Soaking seeds before sowing can improve germination. By soaking the seeds in water, the structure of the hard seed coat is softened, which helps break dormancy and promotes germination. Soak for 2–4 h in warm water. Seeds should be sown 7–15 mm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not excessively wet or dry. Optimal soil temperature: 20–25 °C. Seeds germinate in about 7–14 days.
It is recommended to sow outdoors directly in the ground in May with 30 cm spacing. To obtain large, long roots, provide rich, well-drained, loose soil. Water regularly to maintain moisture. From sowing to harvest: 120–150 days
If grown decoratively, burdock is not demanding about special soil conditions. Distance between plants about 90 cm.
