Russian tarragon (Artemisia dracunculoides) - A perennial, hardy herbaceous plant with narrow, green leaves and strong growth ability. The plant forms dense clumps, reaches about 60–120 cm in height, grows well in a sunny location and well-drained soil. Very winter-hardy and suitable for our climate. Easy to grow and suitable for use both fresh and dried in teas and the kitchen.

Sow in spring, germinates relatively easily, and when the plants are established, they can also be divided. Russian tarragon is undemanding, tolerates drought, suitable for both the garden and herb beds.

Difference between Russian and French tarragon:

Russian tarragon (Artemisia dracunculoides). Often also called in the market (Artemisia dracunculus var. inodora).

– aroma is significantly weaker, taste is mild
– can be propagated from seeds
– very hardy and overwinters well
– grows rapidly, forms large, dense clumps
– easy to grow, undemanding

French tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus). Since French tarragon is not propagated by seeds, as the flowers are mostly sterile, then most likely seed packets labeled (Artemisia dracunculus), in reality are (Artemisia dracunculoides) - Russian tarragon.

– very aromatic with a pronounced anise–licorice flavor
– does not produce quality seeds
– propagated only vegetatively (by division or cuttings)
– more sensitive, less winter-hardy
– more compact plant
– highly valued in cooking, restaurant standard
