Coleus ‘Black Dragon’ (Coleus blumei), 20 seeds
Coleus ‘Black Dragon’ (Coleus blumei / Solenostemon scutellarioides) – another common name is painted nettle. A compact, mid-sized annual foliage plant with striking dark red to almost black leaves. Ideal for flower boxes, containers, and planters, it also thrives in partially shaded locations and can be grown indoors.
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, lightly pressing them onto the soil surface without covering, as light is required for germination; seeds germinate in 7–14 days. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost into a partially sunny or sunny location with well-drained soil. The plant reaches 30–40 cm in height and provides long-lasting decorative foliage until the autumn frosts. Pinch the tip when seedlings reach 10 cm to encourage branching and a fuller habit.
Overwintering: Before the first autumn frost, transplant the plant into a pot and bring indoors to a bright, warm location (+15–20 °C) with moderate watering.
Propagation: Coleus is easily propagated from cuttings. Take a healthy 10 cm stem cutting and place it in moist soil or a glass of water until roots develop.
Care: Regularly pinch the tips to encourage branching and fullness. Provide a bright location but avoid prolonged direct hot sun. Water consistently, avoiding overwatering.
