Drumstick Allium (Allium sphaerocephalon)
The Round-headed Garlic (Allium sphaerocephalon) is a perennial, easy-to-grow ornamental bulb with narrow, linear leaves and a dense, oval flower head composed of many small florets. The blooms open greenish and gradually deepen to a rich carmine-red. Flower heads measure about 5 cm in diameter, and plants reach 80–100 cm in height, flowering in July–August and attracting bees and other pollinators. Perfect for planting in borders, wildflower meadows, or as an accent among other perennials and ornamental grasses. In most cases, the bulbs can remain in the ground after flowering and will return year after year. Lifting is only necessary if the soil is very heavy and poorly drained, or if you wish to replant them elsewhere.
