Purpletop vervain (Verbena bonariensis)
Purpletop vervain commonly known as South American verbena, clustertop vervain, Argentinian vervain, tall verbena or pretty verbena. Perennial in warm climates, if the air temperature in winter does not drop below -5C. The seeds have good self-sowing ability in autumn, and if the seeds fall into warmer soil, there is a chance that some seeds will overwinter in the soil. In Latvia, grown as an annual. If you want to attract pollinators, verbenas are the plants to plant in the garden. Their abundant nectar especially attracts hoverflies.
The verbena seeds we offer do not require stratification (a cold period). We recommend sowing them in seed trays without any additional treatment. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Darkness is required for germination. Seed germination time: 10-30 days.
Plant outdoors after the last frost. Choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun.
